We all need to find time to get away and get some R&R from time to time. If you’re like me these days, the last thing you want to do is waste precious days spending time on planes or in airports. If you live within a day’s drive of the South Carolina coast, it makes sense to plan to drive to your Myrtle Beach vacation. Here’s why, and here are some tips to make it a great experience.

Make your road trip part of the vacation experience

No matter which direction you’re coming from, a car ride can be part of the experience. For one thing, there are no major highways or interstates that reach Myrtle Beach, so why not go ahead and avoid the interstates altogether? Use your map to find back roads and you’re bound to discover some small towns with interesting stops along the way. Before living here, my husband and I used to do this, and we have found so many little places that sell local art, local produce, and local food in one-of-a-kind restaurants. Although I have lived here for over 20 years, we still visit some of those little places that we discovered long ago. I am so glad they are still there! So make the trip to the beach part of the vacation.

You will have transportation without renting a car

Of course, if you’re driving to Myrtle Beach, you’ll have your car for transportation when you get here. You could just fly in and park at an all-inclusive resort and hail a cab from time to time or walk, but then you wouldn’t be able to explore some nearby places like historic Georgetown, Conway, Wilmington, or Charleston. Not to mention short trips to local seafood towns; namely Calabash, NC and Murrells Inlet, SC. Both have been touted as Seafood Capitals of the Carolinas. You’ll have to try both and decide for yourself.

No high airfares or extra baggage fees

If you’re coming to the beach to play golf, there’s an additional reason to drive. Almost all airlines charge extra for bags these days, so you only add more expense when you have to pay to bring your golf clubs AND your luggage. And speaking of airlines, I don’t know why, but flying to Myrtle Beach is more expensive than most other nearby airports. So driving is an even bigger savings when you consider the higher cost of simply getting here and not having to rent a car to drive from nearby Florence or Wilmington.

All in all, planning a drive to beautiful Myrtle Beach is a wise decision, no matter what season you choose. There is no bad season here, so pack your car and come!
