Smoothies are cold blended drinks that are typically made with a combination of fresh fruit, crushed ice, frozen fruit, and fruit or vegetable juices. A banana is often included to give a thicker texture. Today frozen yogurt, sherbet or sherbet is also used as part of the base for the same purpose.

Generally, shakes do not contain ice cream, as it is the base of milk shakes. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that, with the resurgence of macrobiotic vegetarianism in the US, smoothies began to catch on. These early smoothies were essentially a mix of fruit, fruit juice, and ice. In the early 1970s, smoothies became commercialized when chains such as Smoothie King began selling mixed fruit drinks under the name ‘smoothie’.

blackberry smoothie

Ingredients:
180ml apple juice
125 ml plain yogurt
220g frozen blackberries
1 banana

Method:
Combine the fruit in a blender. Pour yogurt on top then process until smooth. Transfer to a chilled glass and serve.

Blue Berry Smoothie

Ingredients:
300g frozen blueberries, slightly thawed
250g vanilla yogurt
180 ml of milk
360ml pineapple juice
3 tablespoons of liquid honey
15 ice cubes

Method:
Combine blueberries, vanilla yogurt, milk, pineapple juice, and honey in a blender and process on high speed until smooth. With the blender still running, add about 3 ice cubes at a time until all the ice cubes have been added and dissolved into the smoothie. Continue blending until smooth, then divide among four glasses and serve immediately.
