One of the biggest hurdles to becoming an officer is the police oral interview exam, and one of the biggest mistakes new recruits make is not preparing for this interview. In fact, the police oral interview is the most important exam that is taken to join the police force.
Why is it so important? There are many reasons for this. First, this is your chance to show the panel who you are. Second, this is your chance to show the panel how you think. You will not have that opportunity on the written exam or the physical exam. Also, this is your last chance to sell yourself to the panel. Therefore, it is important to surprise them with your answers.
One question new recruits seem to get wrong is “Why do you want to become a police officer?” This question can set the tone for the rest of the interview. Don’t respond robotically and don’t tell the board that you want to become a police officer so you can carry a gun.
Take your time responding, take a deep breath, and tell the story of why you decided being a police officer was right for you. Be honest and clear in your answer. Don’t be afraid to tell the panel how excited you are to be standing in front of them, and about your lifelong dream and goal of becoming an officer. Being honest and telling your story will not only earn you points, it will also make you memorable to the panel, allowing you to stand out from the crowd.
