People want to learn Japanese for many reasons. You could move to Japan or take a vacation there. It’s quite possible that you don’t even have to speak Japanese, but you want to just to get something done. Being able to converse in another language is something worthwhile and will give you great pleasure if you succeed.

Although I had wanted to learn Japanese for a long time, I think the main reason I finally decided to do something about it was because I was planning a long trip to Tokyo. 3 months is a long time to point and nod, so I thought I should make an effort to speak up to get by. I’m not sure I can speak Japanese fluently, but I get asked that question all the time.

There is so much more I could learn on my own when it comes to Japanese and I don’t know half as much as I should, even though I can use the language effectively now. I think it’s highly unlikely that I’ll ever be able to speak Japanese fluently. There is more to learn even if you think you have taught yourself well. In fact, I can fully watch and know what is happening in Japanese cartoons and movies now without subtitles. If I can sit down and watch a movie in English and know what’s going on, then there’s no reason that with a little work I can’t do the same thing in Japanese.

I’m almost there as far as what I’ve taught myself, but I still have work to do. It’s been hard going from not knowing any Japanese words or phrases to knowing quite a bit, and you’re probably wondering how I did it. I’m not going to lie, it took a lot of sweat and many hours of effort. I have to admit that the journey was definitely difficult. In essence, learning any new language requires a great deal of time and effort. But the important thing is that anyone can do it whenever they want.

Finding enough time to study with other things in life can be difficult. However, with a little effort you can study while working out at the gym, for example, or going to work. You just need to find those “wasted moments” and find a way to make them work for you.
