How to keep squirrels out of your trash cans

Squirrels like to get into garbage cans because there is food inside along with a variety of tempting smells. For many, this can become a problem. The more often it happens, the more likely squirrels will keep coming into your yard. This can become a problem as they will get their food out of the trash and spoil your garden and bird feeders or even make it to your home eventually.

The most common problem people face with squirrels in trash cans is that they get on them and start eating. Just get some caps that seal. Place stones on top of them to help keep them better sealed.

Some squirrels are quite aggressive with your garbage. In fact, they can chew through plastic garbage bins upon entering. You need to get a more durable plastic or even invest in metal trash cans. This will prevent squirrels from entering.

Clean up the trash around your trash cans. This will help make sure you don’t have tons of extra odors around the area that attract squirrels and other pests.

Use squirrel repellants around your trash cans. The two most effective are pungent repellants or predator repellants. Both are quite effective against squirrels. There is so much area for squirrels to roam, any repellent will keep them away.

Be aware that you could be dealing with pets larger than just squirrels. There are raccoons and even deer that can be in the city and that are thrown away. You may need to take some preventative measures against these types of pests if you want your trash to be left alone. There are water-based spray systems that will scare and keep these types of pests out of your garden that are effective against these types of pests.
