Cats are very special animals and need a very healthy diet. Since cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they eat meat, they don’t have the ability to process corn or wheat for food.
If you think about what a cat would eat in the wild if it had to provide its own food, it would be catching birds, mice, or other small prey. If they ran through a cornfield on this quest, would they stop to eat some corn? Have you ever thought about this? About the only food they would find other than meat and bones would be the food in the stomach of the prey they have captured. Therefore, when feeding our cats, we would like to closely emulate the diet they chose.
When giving dry foods or kibble, read the ingredients listed. The first ingredient listed is, of course, the largest amount of the ingredient in the container. Food is the name of the meat or other substance that is included in the package. Chicken Meal is chicken that has been cooked into a meal so that it can be processed into kibble. If the ingredients listed contain corn or wheat, you don’t want to feed an obligate carnivore. Potatoes are not a food that cats use, nor are vegetables in greater quantity. Remember when you think of the prey they hunt, a minute amount of these substances are found in the stomach and can be handled by the cat as food. Food coloring is highly unnecessary in cat food, as is garlic, yucca, salt, and pepper. The more elements you read that you do not understand and that you have trouble pronouncing are useless in your cat’s food. Some brown rice is much more digestible.
In recent years, it has come to public attention that cat foods with ingredients sourced from China contain an ingredient called wheat gluten that has been found to be a contamination that has caused death in a number of pets fed foods that they were thought to be safe and have essentially caused kidney failure and death. Recently, this same ingredient has been found in baby milk formula in China and has sickened or killed some infants. Horrible! This ingredient, melamine, is used to increase protein content and is deadly. Reading the labels of the food you feed your cats is essential for their future health and life.
Condoms are another ingredient that needs to be looked at closely. If you’ve used a veterinarian-recommended cat food made by the Hills Company, there’s a good chance it contains two ingredients that have been removed from human food sources. They are BHA and BHT. Why the hell would a company that makes food for animals that need very specialized food list him when he’s a known killer of humans? Why would a vet knowingly prescribe this for a pet that is sick or needs special food? Most veterinarians have very little training in feeding healthy cats and dogs. As a breeder of a very special cat, the RagaMuffin, I have done a lot of research in the care and feeding of cats. I want the best for the cats I place in homes where they are loved and cared for as very special members of the family.
My recommended meal, if you’re feeding a dry or kibble type of food, is one made by a company in Florida called Trilogy. This food is the safest and healthiest I have found for pets. It is produced and shipped directly to your door, so there is no warehouse storage for long periods of time. It does not go to a retailer who then must store it in their warehouses before it is shipped to the retail store for sale to the public. You won’t find wheat moths in long-term storage. Since it does not contain corn or wheat, it can be fully utilized by the cat, making it rich in nutrients. Your cat doesn’t have to eat a large amount to meet her nutritional needs. This also prevents overuse of litter boxes, which is a wonderful thing.
Just a reminder, cats are sensitive animals and many can be affected by ingredients that are harmful, so use care and caution when feeding your feline companion.
